Dutch textile manufacturer Byborre has partnered with environmental organisation Parley for the Oceans. Byborre has said that by leveraging consistent quantities of salvageable marine waste “we can produce textiles and products on scale which demonstrate a near-circular, production and consumption cycle”.
The pair say they have “pushed the boundaries of material innovation to create textiles”, with the first fabrics they’ve developed using Parley plastics – intercepted on coastlines around the world – to create materials “for the next generation”. Parley has previously partnered with the likes of Adidas to offer a consistent stream of marine plastic waste that’s repurposed for apparel and footwear.
With its latest collaboration, the organisation seems excited by the prospect of what might be achieved.
“Working with Byborre is like being invited to the engine room of the textile industry,” said Parley’s Founder, Cyrill Gutsch. “Together, we are not only developing fabric patterns, we are programming the future of fabric making. Therefore, this partnership is a true time machine. We are boosting a future of creativity, collaboration and eco-innovation.”
Thus far, the fruits of this partnership have come in the form of Byborre’s new Edition 9 collection, which features ‘consciously engineered’ knitwear such as vests and sweaters.
With the foundations laid, Byborre’s Founder, Borre Akkersdijk, added: “The next step is to provide this option to other creators and brands so that they are enabled to create their own bespoke textile using these yarns, whilst gaining full insight and transparency on the production processes and ingredients used.
“By combining Parley’s innovative Ocean Plastic yarns made from up-cycled marine debris with our on-demand bespoke textile creation platform, we can produce textiles and products on scale which demonstrate a near-circular, production and consumption cycle,” he concluded.
