Finnish textiles, clothing, and home furnishings company Marimekko has entered into a partnership agreement with Origin by Ocean, an algae refining company to work on a pilot project. The core of this partnership stands on innovating a more sustainable printing process in the textile industry. Their combined aim is to work with a sustainable print paste thickener eliminating synthetic chemicals to minimise the use of chemicals Marimekko’s printing process.
The thickener is the main component of the printing paste which utilises maximum chemicals. Origin by Ocean has developed an algae-based thickener called Caerulo to replace the chemically based thickeners from the printing paste.
A series of textile products were printed using the Caerulo as thickening agent in the test run to confirm the positive result while serving the goal of reducing chemicals used in the supply chain.
