South India’s cotton yarn industry experienced a slowdown in demand as downstream buyers remained cautious. Cotton yarn prices in Tiruppur dropped by Rs. 3-5 per kg due to reduced buying, while prices in Mumbai remained stable. Downstream industries were uncertain about purchasing, discouraging buyers from stocking. However, some improvement is expected after Ramadan.

Mumbai’s cotton yarn market saw slightly better buying during the first half of the week, supporting gains in a few yarn counts and varieties. However, the positive trend didn’t last. A Mumbai trader told, “Buyers remained cautious amid uncertain business conditions, and better demand wasn’t expected until after Ramadan.” The market anticipated increased weaving activities post-Ramadan, as many Muslim workers are involved in the weaving industry in Maharashtra and other states.

In Mumbai, 60 count carded cotton yarn of warp and weft varieties were traded at Rs. 1,550-1,580 and Rs. 1,435-1,460 per 5 kg (GST extra), respectively. The 60 combed warp was priced at Rs. 350-353 per kg, 80 carded (weft) cotton yarn was sold at Rs. 1,460-1,500 per 4.5 kg, 44/46 count carded cotton yarn (warp) was priced at Rs. 280-285 per kg, 40/41 count carded cotton yarn (warp) was sold at Rs. 272-276 per kg and 40/41 count combed yarn (warp) was priced at Rs. 294-307 per kg, according to market report.

Tiruppur’s market faced average demand from the downstream industry, resulting in cotton yarn prices easing by Rs. 3-5 per kg due to weaker demand. Spinners initially did not cut prices, but stockiest and traders offered lower prices as downstream industry demand was unsupportive. Buyers showed little interest in stocking, purchasing cotton yarn only for immediate needs.

In Tiruppur, 30 count combed cotton yarn was traded at Rs. 278-282 per kg (GST extra), 34 count combed at Rs. 288-292 per kg and 40 count combed at Rs. 305-310 per kg. Cotton yarn of 30 count carded was sold at Rs. 250-255 per kg, 34 count carded at Rs. 255-260 per kg and 40 count carded at Rs. 265-270 per kg, as per market report.

In Gujarat, cotton prices improved due to regular buying from spinners, who sought to build stock for longer periods as the cotton arrival season ends, traders said. Prices were quoted at Rs. 62,700-63,200 per candy of 356 kg, Rs. 200 per candy higher than the previous session. Cotton arrival in Gujarat was noted at 30,000 bales of 170 kg, with an all-India arrival estimated at around 1.15 lakh bales.
