Belgian textile innovator Devan Chemicals has found that its Purissimo fabric treatment is effective not just against allergens from house dust and pets but also pollen. The technology uses inactive probiotics captured inside microscopic capsules that are opened by the friction on garments during every day wear. These soon activate as the spores absorb humidity, enabling the microorganisms to consume bacteria and thus eradicate common household allergens.

Purissimo, which is described by Devan as a natural allergen control technology, has been adopted on home textiles, including curtains and sofas, and is effective in combatting pet and house dust allergens, that can cause asthma flare ups and skin irritation.

As we approach the spring months, Devan can now say it also offers a high standard of performance against allergens from pollen that may pose difficulties to those with hay fever.

“As the allergen concentration increases (especially in combination with seasonal allergens such as pollen), the allergy threshold may be reached if no allergen reduction measures are in place,” said Sofie Depluverez, PhD researcher at Devan.

“Few people are only allergic to a single allergen – and the effects of multiple allergens can add up. The key to reducing and even eliminating symptoms is to reduce your exposure to the allergens themselves.

“As the probiotics consume the allergens, exposure is gradually reduced to below threshold levels,” Depluverez adds. “Therefore, individuals with respiratory allergies will be exposed to fewer ‘attacks’ and perceive a better well-being.”
