Technology plays a vital role in enhancing quality of handicrafts products. Handicrafts exporters, entrepreneurs mostly use traditional skills and craftsmanship with some usages of technology retaining the intrinsic strength of Indian handicrafts, which is the workmanship on the peace of product. Major competitor countries like China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines and others are manufacturing machine made houseware, gifts & decorative items and by doing so are able to enhance their market share in international market informed Rakesh Kumar, Director General – EPCH.
A high level delegation led by Shantmanu, IAS, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) along with prominent exporters from Moradabad, Agra, Khurja, Delhi and North Eastern Region are visiting Cambodia to study the various techniques of the innovative product development, infrastructure developed for the mass production and affiliation with the different design institutions, trade bodies for enhancement of mass production in the country.
The objective of the delegation visit is to understand various techniques of product development, production infrastructure, design institutions and other institutional support available to the artisans and exporters of gifts, decorative, crafts, furniture etc. in Cambodia and also explore the possibility of future joint ventures and synergize the strengths of each other. The delegation would be visiting the factories/units pertaining to production of ceramics, natural fibre products (Cane & bamboo, rattan, grass, palm fibre, water hyacinth etc.).
EPCH Delegation met Hon’ble Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister, Ministry of Industry & Handicrafts, Kingdom of Cambodia along with Shantmanu, Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), RK Verma, Director and other prominent member exporters including Jesmina Zeliang, Naveed Ur Rehman, SP Dadoo, Subhash Chandra Verma, Bhaskar Sharma and Narendra Borah. The delegation also called upon Manika Jain, Ambassador, Embassy of India in Cambodia and discussed the purpose of the visit and way forward.
They also visited different craft clusters to see the range of products being produced by the Cambodian manufacturers. The visit of high level delegation to Cambodia will help in motivating the handicrafts exporting community to start using technology in production of handicrafts products with techniques being used in Cambodia which will result in enhancing quality of the Indian handicrafts as per standards and demands prevalent in the world markets said Rakesh Kumar, DG – EPCH.
